Free snowblower? Free snowblower?

Free snowblower. Runs like a champ, too. A premix drinking 2-strokey champ. Mixin’ gas and slappin’ as... wait, no, that ain’t this...

Make Duct Tape Great Again! Make Duct Tape Great Again!

So last year I did some fairly typical aero work with a strip of tape. Turned out it did what I expected it would because physics are really consistent. If you’re interested in how lift/drag is balanced during the development of a car, check out these articles. Decent look into the nuts and bolts of our industry.

Force-sensing fasteners make my pants tight Force-sensing fasteners make my pants tight

They’re stupid expensive, but they are damn cool. Years ago, I worked on a project that could have used them, but we ended up strain-gauging a different component in the assembly. It was the right decision, but it still made me sad. If I’m ever super rich, I’m going to randomly scatter these throughout my car and…

A tale of a boy and his XJ A tale of a boy and his XJ

So I bought this 91 XJ in California about 5 or 6 years ago because they’re cheap and un-rusty out there. I grew up in Michigan, and have since lived all over the country. Rust is a way of life in Mitten Land. It’s part of the car culture. People in the West simply would not understand the twisted sense of pride…

Miss ya, buddies Miss ya, buddies

Never forget that IMSA Merkurs happened. These (and the IMSA Mercury Capris before them) are the sound of my childhood.

Went to the dunes... did BroJeep things... Went to the dunes... did BroJeep things...

I took my new jeep to play in the sand today. A bunch of friends came out, including the new owner of Statutory Grape (also known as the Purple Submarine). Many shenanigans were had, and I finally realized my life-long goal of seeing a Geo Tracker get mad air. Seriously, it flew. We were all pleasantly surprised…

The Aerodynamics of Automobiles The Aerodynamics of Automobiles

I am an automotive aerodynamicist and this is what I do.

Out with the Corvette.  In with another Jeep. Out with the Corvette.  In with another Jeep.

Welp, I sold my C5 Corvette and bought a new Jeep Wrangler Willys Edition. It’s a 6-speed (because I ain’t no punk), has 3.73s, limited slip in the rear, and a terrible stereo. I like it quite a lot and think I’ll get some good use out of it.

What did automotive wind tunnel testing look like in the "Bad Old Days"? What did automotive wind tunnel testing look like in the "Bad Old Days"?

I’m a huge fan of wind tunnels. I’ve been working in them for a significant portion of my professional life, starting in the government sector, now in the automotive industry. I was recently gifted a few interesting documents on the early days of full-scale automotive wind tunnel testing, so I figured I’d share some…

Delta IV Heavy scheduled to launch today! Delta IV Heavy scheduled to launch today!

I just learned we’re planning to launch a Delta IV Heavy today! I like rockets. I like the Delta family. I mean, it’s no Titan (my favorite), but the IV Heavy is awesome just for being the big guy these days. That, and it’s hot-rod-orange!

I Took My WJ Swimming! I Took My WJ Swimming!

So a bunch of my friends and I went to waste a weekend abusing our trucks at the Silver Lake sand dunes this past weekend. Here’s a photographic story:

Do you lift, bro? Do you lift, bro?

So I spent like 12 hours busting my knuckles on Statutory Grape yesterday. Rear suspension work, beer drinking, front suspension work, swearing, drive shaft work, tool-throwing, and transmission surgery. Also, I discovered a leaking oil cooler and radiator that I never caught before. Might need rear wheel bearings…

I bought more pushrods. I bought more pushrods.

I now have 40 pushrods in the fleet. Pictured is 24 of them, along with most of the driven wheels and all of the Chrysler-ness. I bought a 2000 Jeep Grand Minivan to drive while my beloved 91 XJ (and it’s rusty roof shovel) goes under the knife for engine transplant surgery.

NASA isn't dead, but you're forgiven for thinking it is. NASA isn't dead, but you're forgiven for thinking it is.

This weekend I was told that NASA was shut down. I am not exaggerating when I say that this has happened hundreds of times over the past few years. Hundreds. Of course, NASA has not been shut down, but people outside of the engineering and science fields can’t be blamed for thinking it has been.

Well that's unfortunate... Well that's unfortunate...

So the Super Strypi spiraled out of control... Sorry, little buddy! Better luck next time!

WTF Has NASA Done For ME??? WTF Has NASA Done For ME???

This has been around for a while, but I feel like it needs to be circulated again. I keep hearing (generally uninformed) people saying “we waste money on NASA”. Here is a simpleton’s rebuttal:

Godspeed Doug Nash. Godspeed Doug Nash.

I was just informed that Doug Nash died a few weeks ago. He was legend in the bat-shit insane drag racing world of the 1960s and later gave us the mysteriously awesome Doug Nash 4+3 transmission. I’ll pour one out for a great man tonight, a man who was truly one of us. A positive part of our community.

Krag-lopnik!  Finally!! Krag-lopnik!  Finally!!

So I ran about $80 worth of big, thumpy rounds through my 1898 Krag Jorgensen today and it was GLORIOUS. This is the first time I fired this thing and I had no idea what to expect. It was everything I hoped it would be!
