When life gives you snow... When life gives you snow...

... make something fun with it.

What do you guys/gals think?

A question for you engineer types... A question for you engineer types...

I’ve been wondering about gull-wing doors lately. In particular, I’ve been wondering how they affect the structural rigidity of a vehicle. Let’s look at a few examples to see what I mean.

I like it.  I like it a lot. I like it.  I like it a lot.

You all probably know I have a weird obsession with a vehicle called the Scamander. I still want to build my own version of it some day, but until then, I’ve been hoping that someone else would offer something slightly like it. Finally, there’s a concept that I like:

Looking for music video recommendations...

... for a two year old and a four year old. They seem to enjoy music videos from OK GO and Will Pharrell’s “Happy”, but we’re slowly growing a little tired of the same dozen or so videos. So far they don’t seem to like Blue Man Group (it’s a little strange to them, I think).  Anyone here have any other recommendations?

(Not sure if this will work, but hey... Blatantly ripped from Facebook)

'tis the season... 'tis the season...

I need to remind myself to listen to this song around this time of year. It reminds me of home.

VW's ID hatchback VW's ID hatchback

Although not in full production guise, I think it still looks pretty good.  If they can actually produce and sell this at the price of a diesel Golf (which is what they are saying), I can see this selling like hotcakes in Europe.  Although I’ve also heard they won’t be selling this in North America, which is stupid.

Custom Miata shift knob

A friend of mine has a Miata. It’s an automatic (don’t hate - he has a bad knee, and constant clutch use aggravated it). He knows I recently got a small wood lathe, and is interested in having me make him a new shift knob. I do have a scrap of walnut left over from the chair. I haven’t had a chance to look at the…

You've stumped me, Oppo.

One of you (unfortunately I can’t remember who) posted a question which has me absolutely stumped. And it’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while. The question was: “If you had to use your own money to buy a brand new vehicle, what would you buy?” The kicker here is that it has to be a brand new vehicle. I find…

Chairlopnik Chairlopnik

Earlier this year I started making a dining room chair for my oldest daughter. I finally finished it:

Winter tire decisions...

The van is needing some new winter tires (and rims) to go with it. I’ve started pricing things out, and I’ve got a few options. I had a look at what Kal Tire had to offer. The cheapest winter tire they had to offer that looked slightly reasonable is the Sumitomo Ice Edge. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of reviews out…

It's videos like this.... It's videos like this....

... that make me want to build my own adventure-mobile. Imagine crossing a Dakar/Baja buggy with a Dakar truck and part Scamander:

Help me diagnose a noise. (updated with videos) Help me diagnose a noise. (updated with videos)

It’s a 2001 Honda Civic, 4 door. When doing a (legal) U-turn earlier today, I heard a loud popping noise coming from what I thought was the passenger’s side front wheel. When straightening the wheel after the same U-turn, I got a very similar popping noise. I also got the same popping noise making a tight left turn…

Looking for some (home) audio advice

I currently have my computer in the living room, and hooked up to it is a 5.1 pair of Altec Lansing computer speakers that are pushing 13 years old. Unfortunately the speakers are slowly dying. There’s some sort of loose connection in the headphone jack that makes the speakers think they are plugged in (when they…

Cleaning an engine bay to diagnose a leak

It would seem that I have a small oil leak somewhere on the Civic, but I’m not quite sure where. I’ve never really ever properly cleaned the engine bay, so it’s a bit tricky to diagnose where the leak is coming from. I have heard that using a pressure washer is a bad way to clean an engine bay, as it can mess with a…

Looking for an inexpensive 12 volt compressor

Earlier today, just before starting a run (the Taber CornFest run, to be specific), we discovered the jogging stroller wheel was basically flat, despite being filled up the day before. This necessitated a quick trip over to a gas station pay an exuberant amount to fill it up. This got me thinking - I really should get…

I think it's a little dusty in here... I think it's a little dusty in here...

I’m not much of a sports guy, but this still got me right in the feels:

Kids, don't do acid.

In case Kinja’d, apparently there’s been some acid spilled on British Columbia highways at various incidents. Cars were driving through it without knowing, and now there’s a bunch of insurance claims as a result. Moral of the story - don’t drive through acid? I’m partially curious to know what industry uses large…

Not sure if anyone has shared this... Not sure if anyone has shared this...

How about mixing German engineering plus a whole bunch more electronics? What could possibly go wrong? This guy managed to stuff the drive-line from a Model S into an S5. Some of it seems a bit sketchy, but kudos for the guy actually keeping the all-wheel drive intact.
