Papaya

I like to encourage my kids (at least the 4-year-old and 2.5-year-old) to try new foods. Tonight’s new food: papaya. Given that we live in Canada, I really have no idea how a good papaya is supposed to taste, let alone how to pick a good one at the grocery store. I did spend two weeks in southeast Asia, and had some…

Thanks Chariotoflove! Thanks Chariotoflove!

I did eventually get the sticker in the mail. Mrs. Baconsandwich put it on the Sienna, as we’ll likely be keeping it longer than my car. (Current plan is to keep my car for another 2-3 years, then upgrade to either a plug-in hybrid or an EV).

Harbor Freight Titanium welders?

Not for welding titanium, but the brand name, if you can call it that. As far as cheap welders go, how are they? So far, Princess Auto (the Canadian equivalent of Harbor Freight) doesn’t yet have similar models. The ones that I’m looking at in particular are the Titatium 140 or the 170 (dual voltage) model. What makes…

Well, that was an interesting commute this morning

Last Saturday, I tried degreasing the Civic’s engine using some of that Gunk engine degreaser. I followed the instructions on the can - spray it on, let it sit a bit, scrub if needed, then wash it off, then let the car run for 15 minutes for everything to dry off. Apparently I didn’t wash it off all that well, and…

Tried de-greasing the Civic's engine...

I’m not sure whether it was successful or not. Used almost an entire can of Gunk engine cleaner. Followed the instructions on it. I’ve been trying to diagnose an oil leak that seems to have gotten worse lately. Earlier in the week I replaced the cam seal. It doesn’t appear to have leaked since then, but after the…

RTV and an o-ring?

I’m pretty sure the cam seal on the Civic is leaking. Thankfully, it’s a fairly small plastic piece with an o-ring that snaps in to the side, without having to take the entire intake apart. I just got the parts today, and I’m planning on doing it in the next few days.  After watching a few videos, some guys seem to…

Any Honda techs here? Any Honda techs here?

My 2001 Civic has developed an oil leak. I’m not entirely sure where (yet), but I know that I’m eventually going to have to replace my oil pan seal. Everything I’ve found online seems to be for a 2002-2004, not the 2001, or for a 2001 with a manual transmission (mine is an automatic, so go a head and take away my…

Tire plug kits?

I’m thinking it would be a good idea to pick up a tire plug kit. Not that I’m planning on having a flat tire, but I figure it’s probably a good idea to have one on hand. Does anyone here have recommendations or things to look for/avoid with them? Short story time: Back when I was single, and living in a complex of…

What do you guys/gals think?

A question for you engineer types... A question for you engineer types...

I’ve been wondering about gull-wing doors lately. In particular, I’ve been wondering how they affect the structural rigidity of a vehicle. Let’s look at a few examples to see what I mean.

I like it.  I like it a lot. I like it.  I like it a lot.

You all probably know I have a weird obsession with a vehicle called the Scamander. I still want to build my own version of it some day, but until then, I’ve been hoping that someone else would offer something slightly like it. Finally, there’s a concept that I like:

Looking for music video recommendations...

... for a two year old and a four year old. They seem to enjoy music videos from OK GO and Will Pharrell’s “Happy”, but we’re slowly growing a little tired of the same dozen or so videos. So far they don’t seem to like Blue Man Group (it’s a little strange to them, I think).  Anyone here have any other recommendations?

(Not sure if this will work, but hey... Blatantly ripped from Facebook)

'tis the season... 'tis the season...

I need to remind myself to listen to this song around this time of year. It reminds me of home.

VW's ID hatchback VW's ID hatchback

Although not in full production guise, I think it still looks pretty good.  If they can actually produce and sell this at the price of a diesel Golf (which is what they are saying), I can see this selling like hotcakes in Europe.  Although I’ve also heard they won’t be selling this in North America, which is stupid.

Custom Miata shift knob

A friend of mine has a Miata. It’s an automatic (don’t hate - he has a bad knee, and constant clutch use aggravated it). He knows I recently got a small wood lathe, and is interested in having me make him a new shift knob. I do have a scrap of walnut left over from the chair. I haven’t had a chance to look at the…

You've stumped me, Oppo.

One of you (unfortunately I can’t remember who) posted a question which has me absolutely stumped. And it’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while. The question was: “If you had to use your own money to buy a brand new vehicle, what would you buy?” The kicker here is that it has to be a brand new vehicle. I find…

Chairlopnik Chairlopnik

Earlier this year I started making a dining room chair for my oldest daughter. I finally finished it:

Winter tire decisions...

The van is needing some new winter tires (and rims) to go with it. I’ve started pricing things out, and I’ve got a few options. I had a look at what Kal Tire had to offer. The cheapest winter tire they had to offer that looked slightly reasonable is the Sumitomo Ice Edge. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of reviews out…
